Bafetambi Gomez:
The first player on our list is Bafetambi Gomez. Although Bafetambi’s case differs from the others, his inclusion was essential due to his particular medical condition. The French striker has a reflex sign cope disease, a specific point where a football player collapses during exciting or pressurized situations. Consequently, Gomez has collapsed several times on the pitch during his stints with Swansea and Galatasaray. Surprisingly, Gomez still plays football.
Fabrice Moamba:
Moamba is also one of the players who suffered a horrific cardiac arrest during a live match, but he’s one of the few lucky guys who survived the incident. It was a miracle in Moamba’s case. On the 17th of March 2012, Moamba featured for Bolton Wanderers against Tottenham Hotspur in an FA Cup quarter-final fixture.
Moamba collapsed on the pitch in the first half and was rushed to the hospital. After 78 endless minutes of no heart pumping, Moamba was revived. After the incident, Moamba remained confident that he could one day resume his career and play for Bolton Wanderers again. However, after four months, Bolton announced that Moamba had retired from professional football based on the recommendation of his medical team.

Antonio Puerta:
Not every victim of such tragedy is fortunate enough, like Fabrice Moamba. Here we have the sad case of Antonio Puerta. Puerta had already won five titles with Sevilla, one of the team’s most crucial parts. In the first game of the 2007-2008 La Liga campaign on the 25th of August, Antonio suffered a cardiac arrest in the first half of the match. When he became unconscious, he regained his senses afterward but suffered a series of heart attacks in the dressing room.
Later, Puerta was immediately hospitalized, but after three days, football lost a gem on the 28th of August. Sevilla’s UEFA Super Cup game with AC Milan on the 31st of August went ahead as a tribute to the player, with all 22 participants having the name Puerta printed on the back of their jerseys. The news shocked the whole footballing world, and precautionary steps were taken for the future, as guided by governing bodies. But that couldn’t bring back Antonio. Rest easy, Puerta.
Abdulhac Nuri:
He is another sad case of a young lad who could have become one of the prominent faces of the beautiful game. Thankfully, he survived, but his life will never be the same again. Nuri was Ajax’s young prospect coming through their academy ranks. After a brilliant season with the reserve side, Nuri was promoted to Ajax’s first team for the 2017-2018 season. However, only some people knew what was going to happen. In a friendly fixture against Werder Bremen on the 8th of July 2017, Nuri collapsed and was rushed to the hospital by a helicopter, where he was stabilized.
It was a sigh of relief for everyone, but after five days, it was revealed by Ajax officials that due to the incident, Nuri had suffered permanent brain damage, and hence, he is in a coma. In recent years, we have heard about Nuri’s situation improving as he’s awake from the coma and in a wheelchair. However, this tragedy took a beautiful career and normality away from Abdulhac Nuri. Christian Eriksen:
Here comes the man, the legend of the game, and probably one of the best midfielders on the planet—recently, Christian Eriksen, the number 10 and star of Denmark. A country ready to be hyped for their Euro 2020 opening game against Finland. But in the 42nd minute of the game, Eriksen collapsed, leaving the whole world in shock.
The doctors were desperately trying to revive him for nine minutes while on the pitch. Later, a photograph of Eriksen in a conscious state while leaving the pitch went all over the news, showing he was aware. In the following days, Eriksen communicated through his Instagram that he was doing well. Get well soon, Chris.
